Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu Celebrates International Tea Day 2026 Marking “159 Years of Excellence in Ceylon Tea”

    EDUCAST, The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu celebrated International Tea Day 2026 on 21 May 2026 at the Official Residence of the Ambassador under the theme “159 Years of Excellence in Ceylon Tea.” The event brought together distinguished representatives from the Government of Nepal, tea sector stakeholders and other distinguished guests to commemorate the enduring legacy and global reputation of Ceylon Tea.

    The programme commenced with the arrival and registration of guests, followed by the formal opening ceremony and keynote address delivered by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Nepal Ruwanthi Delpitiya.

    In her remarks, the Ambassador highlighted the rich heritage and global reputation of Ceylon Tea, marking 159 years of excellence. Referring to the International Tea Day 2026 theme, “Sustaining Tea, Supporting Communities,” she reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainability, ethical production practices, and the wellbeing of tea-growing communities. She further noted that Ceylon Tea continues to serve as one of Sri Lanka’s most recognized global brands, reflecting the country’s tradition of quality, authenticity, and excellence. The Ambassador also emphasized that tea remains a strong symbol of hospitality, cultural connection, and friendship between Sri Lanka and Nepal.

    As part of the programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization Intergovernmental Group (FAO-IGG) themes for International Tea Day 2026 were presented, followed by the screening of official campaign visuals and videos. A presentation on Ceylon Tea was delivered by the Commercial Officer Bibek Wosti of the Embassy, followed by the screening of videos highlighting Sri Lanka’s tea heritage, quality standards, and export significance.

    A key highlight of the event was the exhibition and tasting of teas representing Sri Lanka’s seven tea-growing regions, allowing guests to experience the distinctive flavours and characteristics of regional Ceylon Tea. The display also featured a range of tea grades alongside other herbal and specialty teas.

    Guests were also treated to an authentic Sri Lankan culinary experience accompanied by Ceylon tea and tea-based mocktails. Dilmah also showcased its range of Ceylon Tea products during the programme.

    The formal session concluded with an interactive tea tasting and networking segment, allowing guests to engage with representatives from the tea and business sectors while experiencing the diversity of Ceylon Tea.
