    Interview with Nirman Ojha

Head of Department – Europe, Hub International Education Pvt. Ltd.

    1. Why is Germany becoming such a popular destination for Nepali students?

Germany offers a unique combination of tuition-free education, world-renowned public universities, and globally respected degrees. For Nepali students, the low cost of studying—thanks to free tuition at most public institutions—and the high quality of academic and research opportunities make it extremely attractive. The education system focuses on practical skills, internships, and industry collaboration, preparing students not just for degrees but careers. Additionally, post-study work opportunities and clear immigration pathways allow international students to envision long-term careers in Germany.

    2. What makes the German education system stand out from others like the US, UK, or Australia?

Unlike systems heavily dependent on private tuition and student debt, Germany’s public universities prioritize accessibility and academic merit. Students receive top-tier education without incurring massive financial burdens. The German model integrates theory with hands-on learning, especially through lab work, real-life projects, and internships. Moreover, their dual education model (combining academic and vocational training) gives students a competitive edge in the job market. With its strong focus on research, innovation, and sustainability, Germany’s education system is a long-term investment in both personal and professional growth.

    3. Can you walk us through the basic application and visa process for studying in Germany?

Certainly. Applications to German universities are fairly structured and transparent. Most universities offer two intakes: Summer (April) and Winter (October). Students should apply at least 3–6 months in advance, submitting academic transcripts, language proficiency (IELTS or German), motivation letters, and recommendation letters.

The visa process includes securing a “blocked account” (currently €11,904 for 12 months), showing financial capability, and providing university admission documents. The German Embassy in Kathmandu is clear about processing times—usually 8–12 weeks—and this allows students to plan ahead confidently. Our role at Hub is to make sure every step is smooth and well-documented.

    4. Many students are concerned about financial burden. How does Germany address this?

This is where Germany really excels. Unlike countries with high tuition fees, Germany’s public universities charge little to no tuition—only a semester contribution of €100–€350. Living costs are managed through the blocked account, ensuring students can sustain themselves.

What’s more, students are allowed to work part-time (up to 20 hours/week), with a minimum wage of around €12.82/hour. Those who learn German can access better-paying jobs, earning €15–€20 per hour. With such support and affordability, Germany makes higher education not only accessible but sustainable.

    5. How important is the German language for studying and working in Germany?

Language plays a vital role. While many Master’s and some Bachelor’s programs are in English, German proficiency dramatically expands both academic and employment opportunities. Especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—which are the backbone of the German economy—knowing the language is often essential.

Moreover, it leads to higher earnings, better internships, and smoother cultural integration. For long-term goals like settling or obtaining permanent residency, German skills are highly beneficial. At Hub, we always encourage students to start learning the language early—even before they fly.

    6. What happens after graduation? Can students stay and work in Germany?

Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages is the 18-month post-study job-seeking visa offered by Germany. After graduation, students can stay and search for a job related to their field of study. During this time, they can work in any capacity and once employed in a relevant role, they can transition to a residence permit for work.

Germany is facing a skilled labor shortage, particularly in STEM, healthcare, IT, and renewable energy sectors, so qualified international graduates are in demand. The transition from student to full-time professional is very clear and legally supported.

    7. How does Hub International Education help students navigate this entire journey?

At Hub International Education, we act as a complete pathway partner. From university selection, documentation, and language preparation to visa processing and pre-departure orientation—we cover it all. For Germany in particular, we focus on transparency and personalized guidance. We prepare students not only to get accepted but also to thrive in a new country.

Our Europe department, which I lead, is deeply connected with German universities and language schools. We help students set realistic expectations, plan finances wisely, and make the most of opportunities like internships, part-time work, and post-graduate careers.

    Conclusion

Germany’s education system stands as a beacon of quality, equity, and opportunity. As Nirman Ojha explains, its unique blend of tuition-free education, practical learning, and post-study work pathways makes it an ideal destination for Nepali students. With growing demand for skilled professionals and government-supported integration policies, Germany offers both academic excellence and long-term career prospects. Institutions like Hub International Education are playing a crucial role in guiding students through this transformative journey. If you’re dreaming of a global degree, secure career, and a debt-free future, Germany could be your destination of choice. Highlight link.
