EDUCAST, The Embassy of Israel in Nepal hosted a grand reception in Kathmandu on Thursday, celebrating the 77th Independence Day of the State of Israel and marking 65 years of diplomatic relations between Israel and Nepal.
The event was graced by Vice President of Nepal, Rt. Hon. Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, as the chief guest. The reception brought together high-level government officials, members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, journalists, and distinguished guests from various sectors.
Delivering his address, Ambassador Shmulik Arie Bass highlighted Israel’s remarkable journey marked by resilience, unity, and innovation. He underscored the deep-rooted ties with Nepal since the establishment of diplomatic relations on June 1, 1960, stating, “Our strength lies in our people’s spirit. Together with Nepal, we aim for a better future.”
The Ambassador also shed light on the growing bilateral cooperation in areas such as agriculture, education, and health, particularly emphasizing Israel’s agricultural training programs that have benefited over 4,000 Nepali youth under the popular “Learn and Earn” initiative.
The evening carried a solemn tone as it paid tribute to the victims of the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. Emotional video testimonies of survivors — Nepali national Mr. Dhan Bahadur Chaudhary and Israeli citizen Ms. Noa Beer — were screened, providing poignant accounts of their ordeal. A heartfelt video message from the sister of Mr. Bipin Joshi, the Nepali national still held hostage by Hamas, deeply moved the attendees.
Adding a cultural dimension, students from Himali Boarding School performed a captivating dance dressed in the colors of the Israeli flag and traditional Nepali attire, symbolizing friendship between the two nations. Guests also enjoyed a fusion of Israeli and Nepali cuisines, while an Israel-themed photo booth created a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
A special video presentation portraying Israel’s 2,000-year journey of hope, survival, and return to the homeland inspired the audience, reminding all of the strength that comes from perseverance and unity.
The event beautifully captured the essence of Israel’s national tradition of moving from Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) to Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day) — a unique transition from remembrance to celebration, sorrow to joy.
