The Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu celebrated Pohela Boishakh 1433, the Bangla New Year, with vibrant cultural displays and traditional festivities on April 17, 2026. The event served as a bridge between nations, highlighting Bangladesh’s distinct cultural identity while fostering regional harmony.

The celebration was attended by a distinguished gathering, including the Secretary General of SAARC as the Guest of Honor, alongside Ambassadors and diplomats from India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the USA. Senior Nepali government officials and prominent business leaders also joined the Bangladeshi community for the festivities.

In his welcome address, the Bangladesh Ambassador emphasized that Pohela Boishakh transcends religious and geographical boundaries. He noted the deep-rooted civilizational links between Bangladesh and Nepal, citing the Charyapada—the earliest form of Bengali vernacular—as a shared heritage. He highlighted how the solar calendars of both nations align, with Pohela Boishakh and the Nepali Naya Barsha both falling in mid-April, symbolizing a shared seasonal rhythm.

    The event featured:

    • Cultural Performances: Collaborative renditions of Bangla and Nepali songs by artist Sabu Lama, local students, and the Bangladeshi community.

    • Traditional Cuisine: Guests enjoyed symbolic dishes such as Panta-Ilish (soaked rice with Hilsa fish), various pithas (traditional cakes), and a full-course Bangladeshi dinner.

    • Festive Decor: The premises were adorned with colorful festoons and traditional artifacts, recreating the spirit of a “Boishakhi Mela.”

The guest of honor praised the celebration as a testament to “uniqueness amid diversity,” stressing that such cultural exchanges are vital for strengthening the bonds of friendship across South Asia.
